Patrick Demarchelier, world-renowned fashion photographer, has died at age 78. His team confirmed the news in a statement posted to his public Instagram account on March 31. "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick Demarchelier on March 31st 2022, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Mia, his three sons Gustaf, Arthur, Victor and three grandchildren."
Demarchelier is best remembered as Princess Diana's personal photographer. During his career, he also worked with music icons like Madonna and Janet Jackson and shot covers for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and more. As one of the most prominent fashion photographers of his time, Demarchelier also lensed several campaigns for major fashion brands including Dior, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, and more.
Beyond his career accolades, Demarchelier is remembered by fans of the cult classic film "The Devil Wears Prada." During a now-famous scene on Andy Sachs's (Anne Hathaway) first day of work at Runway magazine, her boss, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), asks if she has Demarchelier on the phone. Confused, Andy turns to her coworker Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) for help. As Hathaway's character spends the next minute going into a frenzy, Emily announces, "I have Patrick!" Demarchelier also appeared in the "Sex and the City" movie in 2008, photographing Carrie Bradshaw for a fictional Vogue shoot.
In 2018, seven women models accused the photographer of sexual assault, and Demarchelier denied the allegations. "People lie and they tell stories. It's ridiculous," he told The Boston Globe at the time. In response to the allegations, Condé Nast issued a statement that read, "We have informed Patrick we will not be working with him for the foreseeable future."
Demarchelier's family has not issued a public statement remarking on his passing. Since the news of his death, however, many friends and former coworkers have flocked to the comments to express their condolences and share memories of their time with the famed photographer.
"Such an honor to have worked with you dear Peter Rest In the Most Peace and we will miss you! 🙏🏿💔💔😢," model Adut Akech Bior commented. Legendary hairstylist Sam McKnight added, "Oh I am so sad to hear this. I had the BEST TIMES with Patrick, endless incredible iconic photos, wonderful memories, a lifetime of laughter, I have so much to thank him for, there will never be another. Condolences to his beloved family. 💔💔💔."
Once upon a time, before street style changed the way we'd view dress codes forever, there existed an extremely unhelpful fallacy that fashion editors never wore jeans. As a Millennial who lived through this changing of the guard, it's hard to say who or what was to blame—likely a fun combination of passé ideas around professionalism, gatekeeping, and good old-fashioned sexism. Sadly, we fashion nerds spent those years robbed of the kind of hyper-indulgent, wonky conversations about denim that other trends demanded. So let's overcompensate for a moment, shall we?
Recent chats with my fashion-editor friends (all of whom, I will add, truly thrive when it comes to wearing denim) are buzzing around a modern iteration of the all-American vibe that Calvin Klein has come to define. It's classic style anchored in great jeans, with a punchy little edge. Accessories are attention-seeking, like how we might have dressed that first summer we came to New York for an internship, but a closer look suggests it's the denim that's doing the work—shaping silhouettes and lending itself to styling that feels intentional without trying too damn hard. After all, isn't that instantly effortless vibe exactly what we love about denim? The way it takes our extra-ness down a notch? I cornered three of my fellow fashion editors to discuss (and give you a peep at how we're wearing our favorite denim right now, of course).
"Honestly, nothing feels more classic than denim and a tee. It's an outfit recipe that people of all ages and style preferences can wear effortlessly. American style is all about adding your own flair, and that's what we've been doing with this pairing for centuries. When creating this look, I stepped out of my comfort zone a bit because I don't typically gravitate toward a mostly black ensemble. I absolutely love neutrals, but my style tends to err on the lighter side (whites, creams, and grays), keeping my outfits easy to pair with bold colors. I would totally wear this outfit to a dinner date or a day at the museum." — Aniyah Morinia, associate editor
"Why does the thought of classic, American style immediately transport me to a scene in an old Western movie? I'm picturing lots of denim and Western touches that read 'chic cowboy,' which was the inspiration for this look. Every recent decade has been dominated by a popular denim trend. That's how important it is to American culture and fashion in general. We've got the bell-bottoms of the '60s, the baggy styles of the '90s, the infamous low-rise of the early aughts—and that's just scratching the surface. Calvin Klein has played a huge part in the popularity of jeans and was one of the first to create a designer-denim craze by putting his logo on the back pocket of jeans. The brand's styles have evolved constantly over the years, and it's always one of my go-tos for denim." — Michaela Bushkin, senior fashion editor
"The all-American vibe reads as wholesome, but it's definitely a bit sexy. I love that Calvin Klein has always embraced this effortless, more inclusive approach, and that continues this season with so many non-gendered pieces (like my favorite denim jacket). I paired it with a black slip dress, which is one of those staples that's really worth investing in. It's endlessly versatile, always in style, and perfect for those long days out and about in New York, which demand outfits that can handle uncertain dress codes and the possibility that you won't have time to pop home and change before dinner. I love the contrast of the rigid Kurabo denim against silk that feels almost liquid." — Natalie Cantell, executive director
"Classic Calvin Klein ads definitely inspired my outfit. I wanted the underwear to be a point of focus, but I love how it didn't take away from the double-denim moment at all. I tend to dress in a way that mixes and matches polished pieces with more casual styles, which is why I paired this low-key look with elegant accessories like pointed-toe kitten heels and a simple black handbag. I would wear this look out to dinner with friends. I think it's the perfect outfit for showing off some more daring styling elements (like exposed underwear) while still reading fairly approachable thanks to the denim." — Lauren Eggertsen, editorial director
Emma Roberts is all about embracing color. On March 31, the "American Horror Story" actress stepped out in NYC for Kate Spade New York's fall 2022 presentation wearing a serious amount of houndstooth. Styled by her go-to duo Brit and Kara Elkin, Roberts wore a red-and-pink houndstooth-patterned coat that featured red fur along the cuffs and collar. She stuck to the same bright color scheme under the coat with a matching red-and-pink tweed dress. Roberts finished the ensemble with a pair of red pointed-toe heels and a white Kate Spade New York structured purse.
If you look closely, you can see Roberts's dainty gold huggie earrings, each with an accompanying ruby stone. It's an outfit that Chanel Oberlin, her "Scream Queens" character, would approve of - thanks in part to the chic coat and white Lelet NY hair bow. Roberts posed for photos with Katie Holmes and Rosario Dawson at the event as they checked out the brand's new collection of printed dresses and colorful accessories.
The actress has been all about pink lately. Just last month, she soaked up some sunshine in Costa Rica wearing a high-waisted hot-pink Solid and Striped bikini. Roberts might be back from vacation, but at least she's got a super-cute houndstooth coat to keep her warm in New York. See photos from the stylish Kate Spade event ahead.
I love a relatable celebrity outfit, and Kaia Gerber is one celebrity who has plenty up her sleeve, as her street style has proven time and time again. One relatable item she wears often is flats, so she's a good person to look to if you're curious about what the latest flat shoe trends are.
Recently, while out in L.A., Gerber wore a pair of Dôen Mary Janes with a mini dress (also by Dôen), and the look was as simple as can be but also very chic. It's not surprising that Mary Janes have made a comeback, as they're ballet flat-adjacent, and we've all been talking about the impending return of that trend (shout out to Miu Miu). Also, Gerber isn't alone—Zoë Kravitz is another sartorially influential celebrity who has been wearing Mary Janes recently.
Short hemlines are everywhere this season, so if you've been looking for ways to make mini lengths a little more low-key, I strongly suggest getting a pair of Mary Janes. And while there are plenty of designer versions to choose from, via The Row, Manolo Blahnik, and Prada, to name a few, there are also many chic affordable options on the market. Shop some of my favorites below.
Swimwear brand Andie is known for making pool-ready pieces tailored to fit the body in all the right places. Scrolling through the swimsuit maker's site, you'll find a sea of figure-flattering one- and two-piece bathing suits in a range of colors and available in sizes XS-XXXL. Recently, I was offered the opportunity to give an Andie one-piece swimsuit a try and chose The Mykonos ($115).
The Mykonos silhouette is available in many fabrics and colorways. There's the "flat," which is made of nylon and spandex and available in black, cherry red, and navy. "Eco Poly," the second fabric, is made of spandex and a recycled, plastic-bottle-sourced polyester; it's available in a limited-edition espresso color. Finally, there's Ribbed: a nylon-spandex blend that offers the most compressive fit, according to Andie's site. It's available in two classic colors: black and white. After analyzing the size chart, I chose a black, long-torso version of The Mykonos - Ribbed in XXL. For context, I'm 6'2" and normally wear a size 18.
When I put the one-piece on for the first time, I immediately realized why it's one of the brand's bestsellers. The ribbed fabric has a slight hold to it, but it's not tight; the bathing suit is still easy to pull on and slide off. The brief-style bottom half has a gusset that is wide enough to provide full coverage in front while keeping the derrière shielded from the sun. Wide straps on the top half dive into a plunging neckline that has a couple of inches of fabric between the cups - a silhouette reminiscent of an upside-down trapezoid. As for the triangular cups, there's a vertical stitch that runs from the under-bust seam over the middle of the cups and all the way up to the straps. The stitch doesn't cut my breasts in half. I'm also relieved that the cups cover my 42G bust with no spillage. And, thankfully, there's no underarm spillage either (pictured below).
My favorite detail is at the waist. There's a seam beneath the removable cups, a few inches of fabric, and then another seam on the waistline. The ribbed fabric between the seams forms a band that gently hugs my waist and flatters my figure.
Once I was done ogling the details, it was time to try out The Mykonos. To give my new bathing suit a proper test, I went to the nearest Equinox in New York (it has a rooftop pool that's perfect for a plunge and photos). In 30 minutes of bobbing, doggy paddling, and splashing around in the pool, I never had to adjust the bottom half of my swimsuit - I normally end up having to pry sopping wet fabric from between my cheeks, butt not with this swimsuit. I did have to adjust the top after my test swim, but it was nothing a little shift-and-wiggle couldn't fix. With so many well-placed details - and nothing ever popping out on top or below - The Mykonos is ready to be worn poolside in Greece (or New York). As you can see from the GIF below, Andie's The Mykonos bathing suit made me so happy that all I could do was jump for joy!
Penelope Featherington's yellow dresses aren't going anywhere in "Bridgerton" season two, but now more than ever, the details are worth honing in on. Season one costume designer Ellen Mirojnick originally chose yellow for Penelope - whose alter ego is gossip columnist Lady Whistledown - because it represents her deceitful nature and also ties back to the Regency era, when yellow was one of the more fashionable colors. Her mother, Portia, who is incredibly concerned with the family's social standing, has chosen the shade for her daughters as she works tirelessly to find them husbands.
In season two, Penelope's distaste for yellow is highlighted when Edwina Sharma compliments her dress at the ball and she interprets the remark as sarcasm. "Oh, you have a sense of humor," Penelope says, going on to admit to Edwina she's grown weary of the color. "I can understand," Edwina replies. "Though, I suppose in truth it is not a matter of the color but rather how one wears it. You wear it well."
The exchange is brief, but acknowledges the significance behind Penelope's wardrobe on the show, which expands to incorporate more pinks as Sophie Canale takes the reins as the series's costume designer in season two. Canale explained in an interview with Fashionista that this shift happens for Penelope because she is getting older and surely more mature as she gleans more and more information about the secrets of the ton - all of which she'll shed light on as Lady Whistledown in her newsletter.
"However they may be sticking to the rules, the Featheringtons' fabric choices and embellishments are not like anyone in town," Canale teased in a Shondaland article about this season's screen style, speaking to the luxurious brocade finishes, intricate embroideries, and matching accessories Penelope wears. Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens have only been engaged for a month, but Biles is already coming up with ways to make affianced life better. After announcing the news of their engagement on Feb. 15, Biles shared a peek at her sparkling engagement ring: a massive oval-shaped diamond set on a white-gold pavé band surrounded by dozens of miniature diamonds. Owens custom-designed the ring with the help of ZoFrost & Co., giving it his own personal touch before offering it to his wife-to-be. Biles, however, recently revealed that she has a second "engagement ring" that holds a very different meaning.
"Okay HOW CUTE. So I can [work out] & not damage my engagement ring 🤍🤍🤪🤪," Biles captioned an Instagram Stories video of her second ring. Made of silicone, the fake "engagement ring" is perfect for sweaty workouts and trips to the gym - something the Olympic athlete likes to squeeze into her schedule regularly. The ring, likely a White Diamond Silicone Ring ($225 to $1,365) from Casual Carats, comes in four diamond sizes and is available in yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold. Biles opted for white gold set with a full-cut diamond.
If you are currently engaged (see: Sydney Sweeney, Megan Fox, and Lana Condor), wear a wedding ring, or never leave home without your signature hand jewelry, you know that ghostly feeling your fingers get when you're missing your favorite band. Made with comfortable silicone that wicks away water, Biles's piece is practical, yet stunning, making it the perfect replacement for her actual ring when she goes to the gym. Plus, swapping out her jewelry for a decoy ring eliminates any worries of leaving the real deal behind in a locker or gym bag.
Some traditions say you should wear two rings on your wedding day, but Biles's genius hack is proof that it never hurts to have three. If you're in need of a placeholder ring that can handle a little wear and tear, shop Biles's gym-friendly engagement ring and a few other affordable options ahead.
