Posh Gvasalia Lanvin is Crowned as the Winner of Slay The Runway II

Tonight, FASHION held its virtual runway competition Slay The Runway II, a co-production with Karim Olen Ash and XPOSED and presented in association with Tide and Jean Paul Gaultier, in support of The 519. Moderated by Twysted Miyake-Mugler, the judges – Tamar Miyake-Mugler, supermodel and Canada’s Drag Race judge Stacey McKenzie and FASHION’s creative and fashion director George Antonopoulos – watched as 10 finalists (Diseiye, Ebony Xclusive Lanvin, Gala Siriano, Hannah Arsovskihan, Mars Alexander, Nick “Miami” Benz, Oleg Kasynets, Posh Gvasalia Lanvin, Roderic Monroe and Songbird Miyake-Mugler) presented their interpretation of #FreedomFabulousness and turned their living rooms, sidewalks, driveways and more into a fierce runway. Only one could be crowned as the winner – and Posh Gvasalia Lanvin came out on top, narrowly clinching the victory with an impressive 30/30 score after flooring the judges with his submission.

“His walk was incredible!” says Antonopoulos of the Vancouver-based winner. “From the moment he turned the corner and started giving us a ’90s-inspired Linda Evangelista supermodel walk, he owned every second of it. The look, which looked like it was straight off the Jacquemus S/S20 runway, and when he wrapped the massive hat around his body – that sold it for me. ” Tamar agrees, telling FASHION, “Posh Lanvin did what we like to call in ballroom ‘waking it up.’ He demanded our attention in a way many others did not. Just like I teach my house kids, you have to sell it from the moment you are seen stepping onto that runway. Posh not only finessed the limited space he had to work with, he also used his effect (a ballroom term for costume) to elevate the overall performance. It felt seasoned, confident and poised. Posh slayed the runway. The runway didn’t slay him.” McKenzie added, “Posh commanded the runway as soon as he stepped out. His walk was strong and confident with the right amount of playfulness, and his outfit was not only a great representation of his cultural background, it was very well thought out, fashionable and he knew how to work it.”

Speaking with FASHION about the inspiration behind his look, Posh said, “The theme of the runway challenge was ‘freedom’ – which is a word that I believe is quite sensitive during the current climate as society is re-evaluating our systemic racism. So my way of interpreting the theme was to celebrate my Philippine ancestry by featuring the Pina Barong (a traditional Filipino garment made with pineapple fibres) and Banig (a traditional floor mat) wrapped around my waist, and to literally ‘top’ it off  with a very large woven Jacquemus-style hat, that I actually purchased in Thailand.” He adds that he was “in shock” upon finding out he had won “knowing the talent of the community that entered.” As for how he’ll spend the $500 cash prize? “Even prior to winning, I was thinking about what I would do if I did win and promised myself that I would find a way to return the money back into the ballroom community. I will be giving half of my cash prize to The 519, as it was one of the first places where I was exposed to Ballroom when I lived in Toronto.”

In addition to the $500 cash prize, Jean Paul Gaultier is gifting a limited edition bottle of Le Male to Posh, as well as to our first 10 entrants, the winner of the fan favourite poll and one lucky voter. Tide is generously donating a prize pack worth over $100 to the winner, as well as the winner of the fan favourite poll.

Tide has generously donated to The 519, and is encouraging the Slay The Runway audience to do the same during our event by texting THE519 to 80100 or by clicking here.

Here’s How Moira’s Showstopping Officiant Hair Look Came Together

If, like all of team FASHION (and the rest of the world it seems), you watched the Schitt’s Creek finale last night, then you’ll immediately recall the sure-to-be-iconic look that Moira Rose wore for David and Patrick’s wedding. Sweeping through the town hall donning a Met Gala-worthy get-up and a knee-length wig, the moment felt like the ultimate culmination of Catherine O’Hara’s character. I audibly gasped when the doors opened, a fact I unashamedly tell Ana Sorys, the lead hairstylist on Schitt’s Creek who was responsible for this moment as I called to speak with her about the look.

As it turns out, O’Hara was involved in the ideation of the hair. “When the script first came out, Catherine and I were talking about what she might look like for that [moment], what her hair might look like. We knew that she was going to be wearing a hat, then she had this idea to do a halo made out of hair. When I saw her confirmed look, I suggested to Dan and her that we do an insanely long wig – something that flowed with her outfit. That was how it came together,” Sorys explains, adding that Catherine sketched “a self portrait” on her phone to show her what she had in mind.

The wig was initially 40 inches, but Sorys decided to go ahead and add another 20 inches to it. “I thought it would look better if I made it longer, and I’m really glad I did,” she says, adding that it was the trickiest wig to date. Particularly thanks to the hair halo. “At first I thought it was going to be easy, that I would just get hair and wrap it around this malleable piece (that was stuffed pantyhose that wardrobe had helped me with). When I started making it, I initially had to sew the hair onto it but then [when I started] wrapping it, I couldn’t sew it, and I couldn’t glue it without the hair acting like hair – it was going to frizz, fray, and separate once we bend it. I literally worked on it for a few weeks and I couldn’t find [the right thing to help it hold]. And then finally I had this glue that I used for my tiles on my kitchen floor and I used that to keep the hair in place. It stayed perfectly. Dan watched me work on that for a few weeks, and he was like, ‘You know what? I’ve been seeing how hard you’ve been working on this but if it doesn’t work, don’t worry about it.’ And I was like, ‘No, were going to do this, it’s going to go down. I’m way too invested now.'”

Invested is indeed the right word. Sorys attached the hair piece by piece to the halo. “I couldn’t just use one long piece because it wouldn’t wrap evenly and I couldn’t use a small piece because it would divide. It was an interesting process. But I did it!” I suggest that it seems fitting that there was this much effort put into into Moira’s last wig on the show. “For sure,” she agrees. “And [Catherine] loved it so much.”

As for the incredible wave that cascaded down the length of the wig, Sorys explains this was achieved by her finger rolling “all of the hair, each individual strand.” She tells us, “When Catherine came in that was the last thing we put on her so I undid all the pin curls and that was it.” And as it turns out, the gasp that escaped my mouth as I watched it was a shared sentiment between the cast and crew when Catherine walked onto set in the full look. “I kept it a secret from everybody what I was going to do – even Dan didn’t really know what was going to happen,” she explains. “And when [Catherine] was finished getting ready in the trailer and walked onto set to do the scene for the first time, the reaction that I got from the cast and crew was a career highlight for me. When they saw her, especially seeing Dan look at her and say ‘This is incredible’, meant everything to me.” Understandably, it’s her favourite hair look she created across seasons three to six.

The wigs were such an integral part to Moira’s character, so much so that Ana says she ended up with around 25 for the final season. “My first year there was season three and when I came on board, Dan said, just have 9 or 10 wigs on hand to start off with. [Catherine’s] process is that she would pick the wigs on the fly – she’d have her wardrobe and everything on and when she’s Moira, she would be like, I’m feeling this wig. We didn’t really match the wig and the wardrobe. When season six rolled around, I had 24 to 25 wigs that we started off with. I went wig happy! I had them all set up in the trailer for inspiration so she would see them everyday.”

I ask if they also had names like they did in the show, which Sorys tells me they didn’t, save for a few that would be named later. Though she shares a fun story involving Catherine and the wigs in season six. “In the first episode of season six, there’s a scene with Roland and Moira’s afraid that the wigs are going to be in a fire in the motel room and so she calls out the names of these wigs. When it aired on TV she invited all of the friends she named the wigs after to her house to watch the episode and her friends got to see that she had named the wigs after them.”

Considering she had to have so many wigs on hand for the show, I ask whether her house is overflowing with them right now. “What I’ve done is labeled them with whatever season and episode [they were used for], netted them and put them in bags. No one else but Catherine will ever wear those wigs. I’m hoping that maybe in the future somewhere one of the wigs will kind of be re-worn – who knows! For now, they’re kind of resting at my place,” she says with a laugh.

I tell her that the ‘maybe in the future somewhere’ could be a Schitt’s Creek movie. “Oh, wouldn’t that be amazing,” she says. Wouldn’t it indeed.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Announce First Details About New Charitable Organization

Days after farewelling their roles as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the first details about their new charitable organization. After reports leaked in the Daily Telegraph, the Sussexes confirmed that they are launching an organization called Archewell.

“Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,” they said in a statement.

The name Archewell, they explained, “is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.” They also shared that they had the name ‘Arche’ ahead of Sussex Royal and that it served as the inspiration for their son’s name. “Before Sussex Royal, came the idea of Arche – the Greek word meaning source of action. We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the source of inspiration for our son’s name.” They added that they want “to do something of meaning, to do something that matters.”

According to the Telegraph, paperwork for the name was filed in the United States last month and includes a website, as well as “education and training materials” such as films, podcasts and books.

The pair shared no further news on the organization, but said, “We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”

After officially stepping down from their royal roles last week, the Sussexes are currently spending time as a family in their new hometown of Los Angeles. Watch this space.

Three Reasons We Love This Birch Bark Extract Shampoo and Conditioner

Let’s be honest: we put our hair through a lot — from heat styling to dye jobs and loading it with product. So, it’s about time our strands got a little bit of TLC to keep them as healthy and shiny as possible, no?

One big part of caring for your hair is choosing the right shampoo and conditioner. While there are plenty of different options on the market, we’re loving Herbal Essences bio:renew Sulfate-Free Birch Bark Extract Collection, as it’s filled with real botanicals that revitalize and refresh your strands. Think of it as a superfood for your hair that protects from the inside out by trapping, neutralizing and removing the build-up of free radicals that can wreak havoc on your hair. Here’s three reasons why we’re obsessed with the collection:

Birch bark contributes to the overall health of your hair

The birch tree hails from cold climates (hello, Canada!) and its bark is known for its distinct white colour that peels away naturally from the tree. Birch bark is an ingredient that’s been used in shampoo since the 19th century as it’s rich in natural antioxidants and vitamins that contribute to the overall health of the hair. Herbal Essences bio:renew Sulfate-Free Birch Bark Collection revitalizes dull strands, leaving your hair healthy and shiny. Though it gently cleanses away impurities, it keeps your dye job safe, so you don’t have to worry about your colour being stripped away. It’s also pH-balanced, which will protect the natural oil and sebum from the hair and scalp.

It has safe ingredients you can feel good about

The collection is free of sulfates, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, colourants and dyes. It’s also gluten-free and cruelty-free. In fact, Herbal Essences’ sulfate-free shampoos are the first mass shampoos to earn the Environmental Working Group’s seal of approval. The EWG is a leading source of cosmetic ingredient information and the go-to database for those looking for more ingredient transparency. To be EWG verified means Herbal Essences meets the rigorous criteria and standards of the organization and therefore contains none of the EWG’s chemicals of concern, meaning you can lather, rinse and repeat with ease knowing your shampoo is free from harmful ingredients.

So how does Herbal Essences ensure product safety to meet the EWG’s vigorous standards? For starters, they assess every single ingredient for safety and toxicity before it goes into their shampoos and conditioners. Those that may have potential to cause harm are put on the “no no no” list and are not included in any products.

It’s endorsed by a world leader in plant science

Herbal Essences has partnered with one of the world’s most biodiverse places — the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew — to verify the botanicals in its bio:renew shampoo and conditioners. Kew Gardens is a world-famous 260-year-old botanical garden and scientific institution dedicated to plant science, herbal medicine and conservation. It’s basically the leading authority on the potency and purity of plants, so an endorsement from Kew Gardens is a pretty big deal. Being vetted and authenticated by Kew Gardens means you can trust Herbal Essences uses real, high-quality botanicals that are traceable back to the original source.

Ready to incorporate birch bark into your hair care routine? The Herbal Essences bio:renew Sulfate-Free Birch Bark Extract shampoo ($8) and conditioner ($8) are available now at Walmart.

How to Go Blonde and Maintain It at Home According to a Celeb Hair Colourist

As the temperature increases, so does our desire to lighten our hair colour. Visions of Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief or Gwyneth Paltrow in The Talented Mr. Ripley dipping into the water somewhere in Italy with our golden manes glistening under the beaming sun dance in our head. But as anyone who’s ever gotten highlights will tell you, achieving the exact shade you’re after isn’t so easy.

“Always bring a picture to a hair colour appointment,” says celebrity hair colourist Tracey Cunningham, known for her blonde bombshell clients like Charlize Theron and GP. Since you and your colourist may have different understandings of golden, ashy or icy blonde, Cunningham stresses discussing your exact vision. “I ask [clients] what do you like the most? Do you like to see ash? Do you like to see blonde?” And she’s quick to guide them to the shade and dyeing technique she believes will be best for their skin tone and hair condition.

If you can’t hop on a flight to LA to have Cunningham give you the best blonde colour of your life, you’ll want to do your research to find a local colourist who’s sure to deliver. Find a picture of the hair you want and check out the prospective hair colourist’s Instagram account to confirm you like their work. If you’re after the ombré or balayage look, choose a colourist who’s experienced with the specific technique—but as Cunningham notes, keep in mind it’s possible to achieve the look of balayage (the technique in which dye is painted free-hand on hair) with foils.

No matter if you’re going from brunette to blonde or just brightening your already light locks, hair products will save your colour from fading and keep it looking healthy. Depending on your hair texture, Cunningham recommends Redken Blonde Idol (a conditioner that enhances colour and strengthens strands), Redken Color Magnetic (a nourishing shampoo for colour-treated hair), Redken Diamond Oil (a serum that softens and adds shine to hair), and Redken All Soft (a collection of products for those with very dry hair).

For more of Tracey Cunningham’s tips for going blonde and maintaining your blonde hair at home, check out the video below and shop her top picks in the following gallery.
