We Challenged 6 TikTokers to Personalize the Newest Levi's® Jeans, and Wow

My TikTok For You Page is never without inspirational fashion content, and lately, DIY videos are piquing my interest the most. Take the six TikTok creators below, who were each challenged to personalize the new Levi's® 501® '90s jeans in five minutes and one second based on their unique craft and fashion aesthetic. The jeans are inspired by everyone's favorite 501® Originals but feature a relaxed, vintage fit. Levi's® are known for being the ultimate blank canvas for self-expression, and let's just say these creators' customizations prove that sentiment to be true. The final results from these talented women are seriously cool and unique. Whether or not they all stuck to the time limit is a different story. (But we'll let that slide!)

Yolanda Espericueta is an expert thrifter, so it's no surprise that she gravitates toward the vintage-inspired fit of the 501® '90s jeans. "I started my TikTok to share my thrift finds," she explains. "I wanted to show people how to dress well on a budget because growing up, I wanted to be fashionable, but I didn't have the means to." Espericueta took up sewing a couple of years ago in order to customize the fit and style of her thrifted pieces, and now she regularly alters her clothing with personal touches. Her new Levi's® denim was no exception. "I chose to add a leopard-print, faux-fur trim to the jeans because I thought it would add a bold touch and give them that funky element that I try to incorporate into my everyday outfits," she says. "The waist sits right where I like it to, and the legs have this slouchy look that definitely reminds me of a '90s supermodel off-duty look." Espericueta also channeled the '90s vibe with the rest of her outfit by styling the denim with chunky platform boots, a crop top, and a claw-clip updo.
Grace Xu may be known for her crocheting skills on TikTok, but lately, she's also been dabbling in embroidery. She tells me that other creators have inspired her to stitch her own slightly imperfect doodles. "I really wanted to preserve the fit of the 501® '90s, so I decided to go in with some freehand embroidery just to make them my own," she says. Xu kept the rest of her outfit simple to let the denim take center stage. "I definitely see myself leaning into the fun colors of the embroidery and styling these jeans in a more maximalist outfit later down the road, but I think there's something about the tiny-top-and-loose-jeans combo that makes for the ultimate cool-girl uniform," she says.
Like many others, Genai Nakama started her TikTok as a fun, creative outlet. "It was amazing to fall into my niche and find other creators and TikTok users that made me feel seen and were able to offer that same visibility I was seeking," she explains. As for her denim, Nakama was inspired by Los Angeles, where she grew up. "Walking down the street, riding on the bus, and even looking at my dad—someone was always wearing a crisp pair of Levi's®," she reminisces. "I wanted to pay homage to the relationship between my city and Levi's® by painting 'Los Angeles' across the front. It's simple but effective," she says.
I've been following Madeline Ronzoni on TikTok for months. She creates these incredible, colorful rugs in all sorts of unique shapes. (I have my eye on this flower rug.) Recently, she's taken her skills beyond rugs, using tufting to create handbags and patches for denim, too. Since Valentine's Day is approaching, Ronzoni was inspired to create red and pink tufted hearts and secure them onto her denim (with a matching heart-shaped handbag, of course). The hearts on the back pockets are seriously cute. As for the actual jeans, Ronzoni says, "I love this pair of 501® '90s from Levi's® because of the relaxed, laid-back fit that still has a classic and fashionable look." I couldn't agree more.
Kelsey Kotzur's mindset about fashion is so refreshing. "You can't tell me I'm not the most badass woman on the planet when I am in an outfit that I know is fierce," she says of her approach. "I love to use clothing to elevate my mood and make it look like I have everything figured out. (Spoiler alert: I don't.)" Kotzur is a denim girl through and through. "Denim is my number one wardrobe staple, and these are loose and comfortable and have that slouchy effortless vibe," she says. For this project, she re-created an epic denim look worn by Hailey Bieber at the VMAs. "I bought a glue gun and 400 green feathers and went crazy. I didn't have a pattern I was following. I just wanted the jeans to be covered in green," she says of her process.
Nandi Perry's style is eclectic, edgy, and a bit "hodgepodge," in her words. "I love that fashion gives me a way to express myself without having to say a word," she tells me. Perry styles a ton of unique denim outfits on TikTok, so I was eager to see her customized 501® '90s. Perry chose to bedazzle the front pockets, cut the bottoms to create a raw hem, and embroider a quote that is personal to her, Til death we do art, on either side. "These customizations just feel like a true representation of myself, and there is nothing more I desire than to have the ability to make art for the rest of my life," she explains. As for the actual jeans, Perry says she loves this pair because "they're so comfortable, and I'm able to move around in them, which is something I always appreciate in a good pair of jeans."
The 501® '90s Original jeans come in three unique washes but I'm partial to this classic, darker wash. Maybe it's the Millennial in me.
Most of the content creators chose this medium wash called "Drew Me In."
More of a dark wash fan? Don't fret—the 501® '90s comes in this faded black shade too.
A classic that looks good with any top.
A fresh white pair of jeans is perfect for spring.
I love the cropped length of this pair.
Light-wash skinny jeans are an essential part of my denim collection.
The dark wash is so sophisticated.

Looking for more of the iconic style? Right this way.

Dove Cameron's Corset Dress Is Like a Walking Renaissance Sculpture

Vintage fashion doesn't have to begin and end with 2000s red carpet looks or '90s vault pieces. Attending a virtual charity gala on Monday night, Dove Cameron recently took it way back with a corset dress that looked like a walking Renaissance sculpture.

Cameron's beige dress is by Giuseppe Di Morabito and features a skirt with a high slit practically made to be worn on a date night. Its draped silhouette also gives us the same energy as the marble creases on a Michelangelo creation. Styled by Erin Walsh, the look was completed with a Bvlgari Serpenti Viper Ring ($13,800) and a Serpenti Seduttori Necklace ($19,300) in pink gold with malachite, sapphire, and diamonds. For a final touch of romance, Cameron wore a pair of white platform sandals showing off the snake tattoo on her ankle.

In photos of the outfit shared to her Instagram account, Cameron also teased a new EP coming out soon, and if it's half as badass as her look, we are not ready. See her stunning dress from all angles here.

Just a Really Great List of All the Black-Owned Fashion Items I'm Shopping Now

Everyone has their go-to procrastination tactic—maybe you find yourself refreshing your Instagram feed, whipping up an elaborate meal, or going for a leisurely walk when you're putting off a task. My personal coping mechanism? Making shopping lists. No matter what mood I'm in or why exactly I'm looking to kill time, my first instinct is to draw up a list of things I need—well, more often than not, things I want but don't actually need. Grocery lists, arbitrary to-do lists, and yes, shopping lists.

Being a fashion editor, I keep a running tab of my favorite brands and boutiques that are owned or designed by Black talent. These names are top of mind throughout the year, but given that February is Black History Month, it's the perfect time to highlight all the stunning Black-owned fashion items that are occupying my cart (and my headspace) right now. In the below edit, you'll find a range of items from pretty pearl earrings to reworked knits and brands from smaller indie labels like LaSette and Sammy B to industry heavyweights such as Telfar and Victor Gelmaud. This one goes out to you, Who What Wear readers, because there's no one who loves a good shopping list more than you do (except for yours truly).

If you haven't heard the name Thebe Magugu yet, well, consider this your official intro. The Johannesburg, South Africa-based label already holds the LVMH prize and is part of Matches Fashion innovator's program, just a few reasons why I'm convinced it's one to know. The stunning designs hit at the heart of what fashion people want to wear now, offering one-of-a-kind twists on staple silhouettes such as shirt dresses or this gorgeous cutout knit top.
Cargo pants are suddenly on my mind with all the cool ways fashion people have been wearing them as of late and I've been eyeing this pair in the perfect shade of olive from LA-based Local European to get in on the look.
Feathers were once a nighttime-only trend, but let's face it, they're a full-blown statement no matter what time of day and these strappy ankle-tie sandals from Brother Vellies deserve to have their moment in the sun.
Ahluwalia is one of the most exciting emerging labels on the scene right now thanks to designer Priya Ahluwalia's uncanny ability to bring new life to deadstock fabrics. I love the day-to-night potential this checkerboard midi dress has.
After going viral for his petite handbags emblazoned with the phrase "End Systemic Racism", Brandon Blackwood has not only managed to garner attention from the fashion world but he's harnessed the buzz into long-lasting intrigue. His latest batch of candy-hued mini bags is proof that he's only just getting started.
Creating truly unisex designs that work equally as well for everyone is no easy feat, but Wales Bonner has managed to do just that and imbues each piece with an effortlessly cool feel. This sweater vest from the designer's latest collection feels retro and modern all at once.
While pearl jewelry is trending at the moment, the simple gold hoops these feature on ensure thid pick is timeless, too.
Everything Christopher John Rogers designs just puts a big smile on my face and this bubbly-yet-sultry bustier is exactly why the designer's whimsical ethos is so special.
If you're not shopping Good American's selection of cool basics, what are you even doing? Next time you're perusing Shopbop or Nordstrom, do yourself a favor and add one of their useful staples like this ribbed dress to your cart.
Nordstrom's edit of emerging brands is so good right now and Sammy B is an NYC-based brand that deserves to be on your radar. I'm eyeing this skirt with the coolest hemline I've ever seen.
When the stylist behind some of the most epic celeb ensembles creates a label of their own, you know it has to be good. Such is the case with Aliette, Jason Rembert's brainchild and the emerging label catering to all our 2022 needs, starting with this insane ruched dress.
If you're in the market for an investment piece of jewelry, I suggest one of Mateo's stunning pearl pieces like these hoops that are special enough to elevate an outfit but easy enough to wear every day.
Nobody does cool knits quite like Victor Glemaud.
Meet the minimalist bag brand I just put on my radar.
I can never say no to a cute cardigan.
Summer can't come soon enough if it involves this stunning swimsuit.
It's the corset-inspired seaming for me.
I've been turning to relaxed suiting trousers instead of jeans lately, and this beige pair hits on all the right elements.
An everyday necessity.
Tove's ethereal draped dresses and tie-up blouses have earned a special place in the hearts of fashion people (myself very much included).
Because zebra print can never not look chic.
In case you haven't heard, big checkered scarves are trending hard right now and my growing collection of the winter accessories is proof that it's a style I'm 100% behind.
Bring the vacation vibes to you.
So here for these halter straps.
From the architectural shape to the '90s style, this is a major yes from me.
Because I know you were looking for cool clogs (I was too).
Make this brand your go-to for cool, minimal swimwear. Shop the Micro Bare Minimum Bikini Bottom ($118)
A basic that's as '90s as it is now.
How charming is this necklace handmade in Queens, NYC?
The ballerina aesthetic is coming back, and this shrug is the perfect way to get in on it.
I can't resist a good lace lingerie set.
The collab to end all collabs.
I don't remotely have anything going on to justify this jumpsuit, but I really needed you to see it.
Believe me when I say that my bags are already half-packed for when it's safe to travel again and this pretty bikini is a key addition.
Herringbone chains have an elevated feel to them no matter how much you actually spend.
Investing in quality lingerie has been top of mind lately and this beautiful silk bralette is definitely the ultimate goal.
Autumn Adeigbo should be your go-to for the prettiest headbands and prints.
This print is so dreamy.
The back is even more stunning, if you can believe it.
Because I could always use another bucket hat.
