Right now, in the midst of this hot, August weather, I can see how fall might seem a ways away. However, if you look at it in terms of the number of days—which will vary depending on how quickly you get to reading this—and then allow for the fact that there’s ordering, waiting, and possibly some returning and exchanging to do, the clock is actually ticking quite rapidly in regard to getting next season’s wardrobe all set. In order to help move things along, we figured we’d share the fall buys Team Who What Wear is prioritizing over everything else out there, which, as I’m sure you know, is a lot .
From pants to dresses to, of course, boots , there was no shortage of great finds among the team and at every price point, too. To see everything we’re eyeing for the months ahead and read about why while you're at it, simply continue on.
This is too adorable to pass up. I want to wear it all season long.
Since I'm set to give birth just before the start of fall, the thing I'm most looking forward to in the coming season is wearing real clothes! Starting, of course, with jeans.
I have not been able to stop thinking about this skirt since seeing it on Ellie's Instagram feed. I love how the brand updated a classic silhouette with simple (yet statement-making) cutouts in a way that still keeps it timeless.
"My soft-pants obsession is likely going to continue into fall, so these polished yet comfortable trousers are at the top of my list."
"A well-fitting face mask is something that I want to invest in for fall. I feel like I have a lot of masks from multi-pack sets that are cheaply made and just don't fit my face that well, and it looks like we'll be needing masks well into fall. This one from Rag & Bone is made up of several pieces for a better fit. How it looks on the model convinced me. Plus, each mask purchase helps Rag & Bone donate to those most affected by COVID-19."
"I'm including a pretty dress just as a mood-lifter. Dare I say smocking is here to stay? It's stuck around for several seasons now, and I'm still jazzed about it. Especially in the form of gorgeous dresses that just happen to be on super sale!"
"Cutouts are a major fall trend that I plan on really leaning into. While a spliced dress might not seem like the most practical fall purchase, I feel like I'll somehow get a lot of use out of it in California."
"These boots just look like fall to me. I don't know what my social life will look like this season, but I know that putting these on with some high-rise jeans and a white button-down will make me feel good no matter what I'm doing."
"Bustiers and corsetry left another major mark on the fall runways, and this season, I'm finally ready to try them out. I love this light-blue one from Miaou and plan on styling underneath big blazers, with roomy cardigans, and tucked into tailored trousers."
"I've been living in these Frankie Shop padded-shoulder tees and want to add this light-chocolate shade into my closet."
"I'm all about relaxed tailoring and know I'll be living in these for the months ahead."
"I can't stop thinking about the sleek but slightly chunky equestrian boots that are popping up everywhere for fall. While I'd normally style them with pants, I'm inspired to wear them with a minidress or Bermuda shorts for a more transitional look."
"Gray is the new beige this fall! I can't wait to sport a cozy-chic head-to-toe 'groutfit' once the temps start to cool (as spotted all over the F/W 20 runways)."
"I'm loving the vintage-inspired collars on dresses and blouses we're seeing this season—so pretty when paired with high-waisted jeans or under a sweater."
"There's something so sumptuous about a ribbed-knit bra top. I'll be wearing one peeking through under cardigans and button-downs this fall."
"I just know a chic but comfy knit dress like this is what I'll be living in this fall and winter. I was already on the hunt for one to buy when the shopping gods blessed me with this one that's currently on sale for $30 and comes in two colors. I'm taking it as a sign."
"Do you ever just look at a pair of shoes and get emotional? Because same. There's something so cool yet classic about the built-in (but removable) anklet on these loafers, and now I can't stop thinking about them."
"Printed turtlenecks are my favorite thing to wear in the colder months, so when I saw this Nanushka one, I knew I needed to own it. The checkerboard print just speaks to me. Plus, I'm expecting the mushroom hue to be a popular color trend for fall."
"I'm still into the slouchy-blazer trend as a simple (and comfy) way to bring polish to a look. This check iteration is versatile and modern."
"Flat shoes for the win this season. I'm loving the chunkiness of these of-the-moment loafers. I'm still pairing my black loafers with white socks, by the way. Love that vibe."
"All about the pronounced shoulders still. This sleek trench coat is a front-runner with its strong design and classic silhouette."
"It's pretty much a guarantee at this point that the biggest trend this fall will be comfort. Hence I have this chic new sweatshirt in my cart."
"Since it can still be kind of warm during early fall, boots don't always feel right to me. I plan on transitioning into the season with these cute ruched ballet flats."
"My fall shopping goal is always to find cool pieces that look good with jeans, and that's exactly what this jacket is. Besides just being really pretty and versatile, it looks like it's the perfect weight for a crisp fall day. There are also matching pants if you really want to go for it."
"Confession: I bought this bag as soon as I saw it online. The different shades of brown are perfect for fall, and I think it looks so much more expensive than it really is, especially thanks to the mix of croc-print leather and suede."
"I'm obsessed with shackets—shirt/jacket hybrids, of course—and this one is altogether perfect. It has a boxy shape that's laid-back but not too baggy, and it's a great lightweight layer for summer-to-fall weather. And yes, the $30 price tag is also winning me over."
"I guess I'll be wearing a lot of brown for fall, judging by my bag and sunglasses picks. I'm all about investing in pieces that I can literally wear every single day, and these cat-eye sunnies will be a treat to pull out of my bag and wear—even if I'm just walking the dog."
