Like many of our classic styles today (think workwear denim or Chanel's Breton stripes) even cardigans and henley shirts have humble beginnings that are spun chic. Henley shirts were named after the English town of Henley-on-Thames; they were the traditional uniforms of rowers in the English town in the early 1800s. Functional and sporty! That's what probably got the attention of designer Ralph Lauren as he brought the previously worn underwear to American wardrobes in the the 1970s.
I've always loved a henley - its open neck shows just enough skin. I've collected the style over the years in everything from tissue-thin cotton, to silk and cashmere. One of my go-to stores for the henley has been Gap, with my mom stocking up on henley shirts for me for both bedtime and out-and-about year after year. Stripes, slouchies, ribbed, and fitted are all available. I always welcome another Gap henley in my wardrobe. I recently wore them with my favorite new pair of Gap jeans. I wear them everywhere from doing construction in the house to writing this article. With a great sale happening at Gap, 50 percent off with the code BIGSALE and an additional 20 percent off with the code ADDON, now is the time to add this classic to your wardrobe! Here are a few of my selects.
