All the Ways to Wear is a monthly series where we round up the personal twists the Who What Wear team is putting on one particular item, style, or trend. Whether it’s the trending denim of the moment or the season’s It print, we hope to inspire your daily outfits and up the cost per wear on some of our favorite items.
What’s your fall denim vibe? That’s the question on every denim lover’s mind right now (myself included) as we prepare our closet for one of the season’s most important wardrobe staples. Luckily, there’s no wrong answer. In fact, when it comes to denim, there’s something for everyone, whether that’s a pair of everyday jeans that whisper “comfortably worn-in” or a statement-making denim dress to wear on a night out. To prove how versatile this staple is, I tapped three Who What Wear editors to style their favorite fall denim pieces from Saks, our go-to destination for clothing that suits just about every budget and sartorial mood.
First up is NYC-based associate branded content editor Aniyah Morinia, a true blue-denim lover who’s had these effortless light-wash jeans from Good American in heavy rotation thanks to their ability to take her from day to night. “They work with just about any shoe and prove to be the easiest to style,” she says of the relaxed cool-girl silhouette. “Every day, I’m finding more and more ways to keep these in my closet, even as my style evolves and the other pieces in my wardrobe get refreshed and replaced.”
To complete the look, she added her go-to bodysuit—a simple style with an eye-catching neckline—a cinched leather tote, and the pièce de résistance, these incredible Larroudé heels. “I’d like to think that this look is playing into the Barbiecore trend on a much lower scale,” she says as I make a mental note to add a pair to my own shopping cart as soon as I file this story.
Out on the West Coast, senior news editor Erin Fitzpatrick centered this chic transitional fall look around her favorite Mother jeans. “As a born-and-raised California girl, I’m a jeans-and-white-tee enthusiast,” she says. “I’m always looking for ways to make this classic combo a bit more exciting via gold jewelry, sophisticated jackets, and trendy but versatile shoes.”
Speaking of which, her military-inspired Veronica Beard topper more than fits the bill. “It’s all about balance,” she adds. “This jacket looks so sharp for work meetings or a nice dinner while the ripped jeans give my outfit a more laid-back vibe. Finally, I usually look to Staud for handbags, but these block-heel slides have convinced me to give the brand’s shoes a try as well.”
She was also kind enough to give me her denim forecast for the season ahead: “For fall specifically, it’s so easy to dress up jeans with a fantastic blazer or jacket. I always have a steady rotation of a few specific denim styles—right now, it’s baggy, ripped jeans, dark-wash straight-legs, and full-length flares.”
Last but not least, Who What Wear editor Jasmine Fox-Suliaman dreamed up this divine denim-based look—with no shortage of shimmer—for a much-needed evening out in NYC. “The world has reopened again, and Beyoncé has released a new album,” she says. “Whether I’m heading to a Fashion Week event or going out dancing, I know this look will work wherever the night takes me.”
She’s quick to confess, however, that she hasn’t always been a denim devotee. “In the past, I’ve struggled with finding the perfect pair of jeans that manages to fit my curves, but as designers have re-envisioned denim for fall, I’ve changed my stance,” she says. “For me, embracing denim this season is about re-envisioning how we wear this fabric and having the courage to embrace more nontraditional ways of wearing it.”
Enter: this artfully faded denim minidress by Rag & Bone, which contrasts perfectly with her killer Schultz boots. “What I love about this look is that it’s just so fun,” she says. “Denim can be starchly utilitarian at times, so being able to spice it up for the new season is a must in my eyes. I love that something as simple as a denim dress can become spicy if it comes in a dark hue with a micro-hemline. Or if you slip into a pair of metallic boots and a denim dress, you suddenly feel like you’re the walking embodiment of Beyoncé’s song, ‘Alien Superstar.’”
