My Friends Call Me the Queen of Basics, Here Are the Top 9 to Invest In

For as long as I can remember, I've always leaned towards classic style. I’m a believer in minimalism and capsule wardrobes. A closet with basics and timeless pieces ensures I’ll never be in a position where I have “nothing to wear." Most importantly, my love of basics has prevented unnecessary shopping trips.

My friends and family comment on how I often manage to look chic and put together despite infrequently shopping. The trick to having a wardrobe that keeps giving will always and forever be the basics. Furthermore, I find that simpler, well-fitted pieces of clothing or sleek accessories almost always have that tailored look that makes one feel sophisticated and positively elegant. The term "basics" may seem elusive and vague—what constitutes a basic? In my opinion, a basic is a wardrobe building block, an item that can be fashioned in many different ways. Basics can be dressed up or down, layered, or worn on their own. Their versatile nature makes them worth investing in, as they can be handy for everyday dressing. My favorite places to get outfit essentials are usually Madewell, Nordstrom, and H&M, but in addition to those retailers, I've included some of my other favorites as well. Below are nine outfit essentials that are worth investing in.

Whether it's a trench or a wool coat, a timeless coat that is bound to make all winter outfits look elevated. Just pick the one that makes the most sense for your climate.

While keeping you cozy, turtleneck sweaters also have the ability to draw attention to your face. This garment is a classic piece to purchase and wear during the winter and can easily be thrown on with your favorite pair of jeans and some statement earrings.

A classic pair of jeans will never do you wrong. I find that a relaxed, straight fit is the best way to go, as the cut is on-trend and very comfortable. As most people know, the versatility of denim is unmatched, so it's incredibly important to find a favorite pair of jeans to wear everything.

I like to refer to mock necks as the turtleneck's chill younger sister. While an excess of bunched fabric near the neck and throat may be uncomfortable for some, the classy vibe of a turtleneck is something that's still desired. A mock neck shirt offers the same sophisticated look as a turtleneck, yet the tubular neckline is shorter, thus eliminating the need for folded or bunched fabric.

A timeless pair of black boots will prove to be the perfect final touch to every outfit. The shoe can be worn in both formal and casual settings and will maintain a polished and clean look longer than any other color. I usually wear knee-highs with dresses or under loose-fitting pants. However, a short bootie can be just as dressy and sophisticated and is better worn with fitted bottoms or flare jeans.

Totes are the quintessential capacious bag. I would recommend investing in a leather tote, as they are essential for those days when you need a roomy bag, whether you're lugging your laptop into the office or heading out on a trip.

A reliable pair of white sneakers is all you need for casual footwear. The neutral nature will ensure that they go with all your laid-back outfits. This shoe has stood the test of time and will probably never go out of style, so if you find yourself needing a new pair, check out the selections below.

A button-down shirt is a must-have in any closet. However, if you want to give your style a small makeover, I would suggest purchasing a satin button down. The shirt instantly elevates a look, whether paired with tailored trousers for a formal occasion or dressed down with jeans for a chic, yet relaxed vibe.

Never underestimate a good pair of trousers. You will appreciate owning a reliable pair when dressing for business formal or business casual events.
