5 Insider Tricks for Finding a Sold-Out Item

As a self-proclaimed expert shopper (hey, it’s literally my job!), I’m willing to go to great lengths when it comes to finding an item I simply need. Whether it’s an amazing pair of jeans, the perfect summer sandals, or an Instagram-famous dress, if an item is sold out, I look at it as an obstacle rather than the end of a journey. With that in mind, today I’ll be sharing five of my best tricks for finding these seemingly out-of-reach pieces since, more often than not, they have worked for me. Plus, as they say, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take!

Scroll through for my top tips and to shop some of my favorite basic (that I'm betting will sell out soon) along the way. Below, five insider tricks on where to find sold-out clothing.

Oftentimes, your best bet is to go straight to the source. One way to do so is by simply emailing customer service. They may have intel on if and when an item is coming back or at the very least tell you what days restocks happen on the site. If you’re not shy, you can ask the brand directly on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. You’d be surprised how responsive brands can be—even large corporate conglomerates are all about customer engagement these days.

While there are many associate resale sites with “old” or “used” clothes, when a relatively new item is in demand, buyers oftentimes catch on and are willing to part with an unworn or slightly used piece for even a small profit. Be sure to check resale sites such as Vestiaire Collective, What Goes Around Comes Around, and The RealReal for such pieces.

If you’re lucky, the sold-out item you’re coveting will have a waiting list either in-store or online, in which case you can enter your email address or provide your phone number and get notified when it’s back in stock. If that’s the case, definitely sign up but also sign up for the site’s newsletter regardless. If the item is highly in demand, the general newsletter might notify you of the restock well before the store gets in touch with you personally.

This is one of my FAVORITE tricks. Whether an item is completely sold-out or just sold-out in your size, bookmark the direct link to the piece on all your devices (cell phone, work computer, laptop) and check it once a day—at least. If someone returns the piece, you’ll likely be one of the first to notice when the site processes it and be able to snatch it up once it’s back in stock. This has worked for me countless times.

If your own attempts to find a piece are unsuccessful, enlist a third party to help you out—they’re effective and allow you to be more effective with your time. Threads is a personal shopping service that specializes in this for new luxury items. Other options include PS Dept. and The Bettina Looney Edit.

These Are the Best Styles of True Religion Jeans, Straight From the Brand Itself

To call True Religion jeans iconic would be, well, a little obvious. The brand's signature stitching and horseshoe motif have been etched in our collective fashion conscience since the early 2000s, its logo second only to its impressively low low-rise styles and beloved fits. Worn by celebs and fashion-savvy folks alike, True Religion jeans were not just eye-catching. They actually made the wearer look and feel great, too, thanks to fabrications and cuts that flattered a variety of figures.

Today, the brand maintains the same DNA and quality in design but now includes a broader range of sizes to ensure the best fit for even more denim die-hards. In addition to creating new curvy styles, True Religion is also dipping back into the early aughts archives, bringing back fan favorites that feature colorful stitching, white Super Ts, and low-rise classics.

So, whether you're inclined to leave low-rise jeans in the Y2K era or bring them back full force, there's a new pair of True Religion jeans undoubtedly calling your name. Ahead, find your perfect pair among 12 of True Religion's most-loved styles, with fit intel straight from the source: Tina Blake, SVP women's design and brand image.

Carrie, a low-rise '70s-inspired super flare, is True Religion's O.G. Styled with heels or platforms and worn with a shrunken top or tank, these jeans look good on everyone. "One of the things we’re excited about is bringing back the iconic fits like the Carrie, which will return in Spring 2023," says Blake. In the meantime, if you want to add a little flare to your wardrobe, she suggests the Reagan as the perfect alternative.
Another quintessential fit, the Joey is the style that celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were rocking in the early 2000s. "This fit is super versatile and can be dressed up or worn with sneakers and a hoodie for a cool daytime look," suggests Blake.
Bobbi is one of True Religion's newer styles. It is a baggy dad-style that sits lower on the hips, and features a loose-fitting leg with cargo and 5-pocket options. "This style is absolutely geared towards a younger Gen-Z customer, and we can’t wait to see what looks they bring to life with this baggy," Blake shares. If you can't wait to play around with baggier looks, True Religion's Big T Cargo style is a fun alternative.
"This fashion silhouette is the easiest and coolest way to wear a lower rise," advises Blake. "It hugs the hips and has a dramatic wide leg with rips and distressing." She suggests pairing these jeans with heels for the ultimate retro rock star vibe.
True Religion's iconic cargo silhouette fit features a mid-rise straight leg complete with cargo pockets with flaps and panels, accentuated with visible seaming and signature Big T white stitch. According to Blake, this is an easy daytime cargo pant that can be worn practically anywhere.
The Jennie is one of True Religion's top-selling skinny fits. Designed to truly accentuate every curve and body type, these jeans are made with super stretch fabric and feature a contoured waistband to eliminate any gap in the waist for curvy girls.
Another True Religion classic is the Halle, an OG Super Skinny fit that is super versatile. "Style them with tees and sneakers in the daytime or a cami and heels for a night out," suggests Blake.
Becca is True Religion's original boot cut design, featuring a mid-rise and slim fit from hip to thigh. "The legs kick open from the knee down to balance out the hips in a flattering way," Blake explains. Wear them with sneakers, heels, or boots, obviously.
"This fit was created after we noticed girls wearing the men’s Ricky jeans, which is a relaxed straight fit that falls a bit looser off the hips," recalls Blake. "We figured, instead of borrowing your boyfriend's jeans, let’s make them tailored to a woman’s body with all the same details as the men’s."
The Billie is True Religion's classic, mid-rise straight fit. The style has an elongating effect and is perfect for wearing when you want to show off your new shoes.
A '90s-inspired throwback style, the Buddha will arrive on shelves in early 2023. These jeans feature a high-rise and a classic straight leg that is ideal for everyday wear. "While we wait for her to drop, shop similar styles like our High Rise Relaxed Straight Jean," suggests Blake.
Finally, don't sleep on one of True Religion's classic fits: the Stella. "This silhouette features a low-rise and body-slimming fit through the hips with a cigarette-stacked leg," explains Blake. Perfect to pair with sneakers and your favorite hoodie.

Vivienne Westwood Has Died at 81—Revisit Her Most Iconic Runway Looks

I have some sad news to report: designer Vivienne Westwood has died at the age of 81. Her husband and creative partner, Andreas Kronthaler, had some sweet words to say in a press release: "I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you, darling."

The brand's official announcement also included details on the forthcoming Vivienne Foundation, which will work with NGOs in four categories: climate change, ending war, defending human rights, and protesting capitalism. Officially launching next year, the foundation aims to "create a better world and implement Vivienne's plans." The press release also detailed Westwood's practice of Taoism and her decades-long activism. Scroll down to revisit 9 of her most iconic runway looks in tribute to the fashion icon.

Hailey Bieber Leaves Us Speechless in a Sheer Silk Dress With a Thigh Slit

Image Source: Getty / Dia Dipasupil

Hailey Bieber is in her sheer era. The resident it-girl looked angelic as ever in a Dec. 29 Instagram post, posing in a whimsical chocolate-brown dress from Mirror Palais's spring 2023 collection. The twist? Her entire torso, with the exception of the folded neckline, was covered in completely sheer fabric.

Bieber accentuated the see-through nature of her gown with a pair of matching string bikini underwear worn high on her hips. The dress also featured a sultry leg slit that crept almost all the way up her thigh. To keep the focus on the garment, Bieber went understated with her beauty look, wearing her natural hair down and undone and offering a closer look at her brown lip liner in the photo gallery.

The brand behind the viral "fairy dress," Mirror Palais has quickly become known for its sparkling gossamer designs, worn by celebrities Olivia Rodrigo and Jennifer Lopez.

This isn't the first time Bieber has dared to go totally sheer. At the Tiffany & Co. Lock Collection Launch Party back in October, the model layered a black see-through Saint Laurent gown over a matching black bra and briefs. Zoom in on her latest sheer look ahead, and stay tuned for the design to hit Mirror Palais's site soon.

Fashion Designer and Punk Pioneer Vivienne Westwood Has Died at 81

Vivienne Westwood died at age 81 on Dec. 29. The British fashion designer was known for her subversive approach and punk aesthetic, and she continued to create until her death. "She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future," read a statement shared to her eponymous brand's Instagram. A cause of death was not shared, but Westwood is said to have passed "peacefully and surrounded by her family" in London.

The statement also highlighted Westwood's belief in Taoism, and shared this fitting quote from the designer: "Tao gives you a feeling that you belong to the cosmos and gives purpose to your life; it gives you such a sense of identity and strength to know you're living the life you can live and therefore ought to be living: make full use of your character and full use of your life on earth."

Westwood was born in the English village of Tintwistle in 1941. Her fashion studies began when she studied jewelry and silversmithing at the University of Westminster. She would later make her own wedding dress for her first marriage in 1962. In the early 1970s, however, Westwood was at the frontier of the burgeoning punk movement, and she ran a boutique simply named Sex with her partner at the time, Malcolm McLaren, who would later manage the Sex Pistols.

Westwood made her runway debut in 1981 with her "pirate" collection, done in collaboration with McLaren. Throughout her decades designing, Westwood became known for often incorporating corset silhouettes, tartan fabrics, and fetish flourishes. She is also famous for her fall 1993 collection, complete with nine-inch platform heels. (Naomi Campbell notably fell while walking in that show.)

Despite her disruptive nature, Westwood became a fixture in both fashion and, ironically, British society. In 1992, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Westwood to the Order of the British Empire, making her a dame. Westwood wore sheer tights and flashed photographers when she collected her OBE at Buckingham Palace.

Westwood is survived by her husband, designer Andreas Kronthaler, and two children, photographer Ben Westwood and Agent Provocateur cofounder Joseph Corré.
